The Coast of Africa is one of the 3 regions in Skull and Bones. It is located in the westernmost part of the map, and spans from the southern map border to the northern map border. The Coast of Africa region is the biggest of them all and appears to be inspired by the shorelines of Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.
The major faction that resides in the Coast of Africa is the Confederation of Ungwana. They control settlements in the northern half of the map much like the Dominion of Rempah of the East Indies. A major military presence is also found in these waters in the form of the Compagnie Royale of the French Naval forces. They hold several points of interest along the south of the coast with a military base at the very south.
Coast of Africa Lore[]
The verdant coastal regions of East Africa are some of the mast breathtaking landscapes in the world. Watery, lush, green, and blessed with abundant natural wonders, these lands have seen the rise and fall of great African kingdoms for millennia. Now, as Western merchant fleets seek to extract the region's bounty of resources, our young pirate crews encounter a land engulfed in a desperate battle for survival.
The seacoast, region features independent city-states, controlled by rich merchants and royal families with a long tradition of fighting each other. These cities' immense wealth is made by controlling trade with the two other regions: the savanna grasslands, home to hunters and shepherds, and the old mining communities farther inland. These three realms - cities, savannas, and mines - have left very different traces of their past. The often-tense relations between them are wedges that the Western powers have exploited.
Confederation of Ungwana[]
Pirates introduced to the struggle for control of the African coast are presented with quite a cultural contrast. The Western powers seeking to colonize local lands and monopolize production rely on military superiority and advantages in technology - great ships, overwhelming firepower, and well-armed troop garrisons operating out of immense land fortifications. On the other side, the relentless Ungwana resistance is built on mobility and highly effective guerrilla-style tactics based on intimate knowledge of the local terrain.
Settlement structural designs highlight the cultural difference in architecture styles - the organic lines and conical roofs of native African dwellings versus the imposing, blocky geometry of European construction. This simple companion between stronghold walls reveals how Ungwana builders used readily available natural materials to create a fortification that feels like part of the environment, in contrast, the Western version of a fort wall is more monumental and standardized, looming in stark contrast to the surrounding environment.
The Confederation of Ungwana itself is a coalition of small clans, kingdoms, and city-states. Created as an alliance against Western intruders, the faction is ruled by a council of representatives from the region's three realms - the cities from the coast, the old inland mine kingdoms, and hunters from the savanna. But the Ungwanan gold mines have dried up, and without that resource, trade is slowing down. Things are getting desperate.
A Land Ravaged[]
Savage combat between Western colonizers and Africa's confederation of native warriors has littered beaches with shipwrecks and left many forts and settlements in ruins. In retribution against the merciless brutality of the invaders, the Ungwana often immolate their prisoners. When ransacking defeated naval vessels, confederation fighters salvage heavy weapons like mortars and Greek fire guns to fit onto their own ships.
Internal power struggles have left the Ungwana in a state of chaos. Sensing opportunity Compagnie Royale and Rogue captains laid plunder to all Ungwana holdings. Now the coasts lie pockmarked by the ruins of once proud Ungwanan forts and cities. While most of the Ungwanan survivors fled inland, some warriors banded together and buckled down. Seeking to restore the broken communities to their former glory, they operate out of repaired forts and are the only ones left to stand against foreign invaders.
Locations on the coast of Africa[]
This area comprises three sub-regions, its seacoast is the realm of independent city states, led by immensely wealthy merchants and royal families who there long tradition of brutal internecine warfare. Their wealth is born of monopolistic trade practices imposed on the other two sub-regions.The savanna home hunters and shepherds, and the kingdoms of the old mines further inland. The bitter division creates a political weakness for Africa the face of persistent European incursions.
In many of East Africa's coastal wetlands and river deltas, the sheltering canopies of mangroves create perfect seaside hideaway camps for pirate smugglers. Poachers can store a cache of tusks and animal hides in relative safety here, hidden from the eyes of colonial powers seeking to monopolize every aspect of regional commerce. In the early days of the Age of Discovery. Western seafarers erected large stone bell towers topped with a cross to mark navigational way points and destinations. Visible to ships well offshore, these crosses up the African coast marked a sea route all the way to the Indian subcontinent.
Pillar tomb mark the graves of great Ungwana rulers. The Cross of the Navigators on the African coast, marking the grim spot where colonial invaders sometimes executed local insurgents. Beyond that, note the ruins of the flooded Sunken Goldmine and the ancient fortified Ungwana city of Great Ukuta, built on a hilltop.

Trivia[]
It is somewhat strange to encounter settlements controlled by the Compagnie Royale in this region, given that the Eastern Coast of Africa was historically colonized by the British and Portuguese, the latter of whom did make an appearance in the E3 2018 Demo. In all likelihood, the Portuguese were cut from the game during development, with the Compagnie Royale taking their place in the region.
