Dragon's Back is a Pirate Outpost located in Islands of the Moon in the far northern corner of the Red Isles. The Ungwana Warrior at Dragon’s Back offers Side contracts to gain the Ungwana Hunter ship set and the Imara Captain’s clothing.

Dragon's Back is found on the Islands of the Moon bordering on the Coast of Africa and the Red Isles. To get there, sail northwest from Sainte-Anne and head towards The Giant's Leap. Then take the river and head up north towards Sitrana where you will exit in the Angaya Coast. Continue heading northwest past Shijavu in the Islands of the Moon region and Dragon's Back will be the next stop from the settlement.

Lore[]

#1 – A Wandering Philosopher

Many a pirate, sailor and company clerk have passed me by complaining of the lack of dragon in this place. Apart from one. An old pirate (who claimed to have been given the name ‘Awful Joe’ by his mother) sat beside me as I wrote.

He held quiet for a stretch, and chatted incessantly. The old pirate’s primary concern was of the fire mountain nearby. It is the dragon protecting the route to Africa, he said.

Awful Joe beseeched me to stop the DMC and the Compagnie or else the dragon would be so incensed that it would bury the entire world in lava. So distressed was he that I found myself telling him I would.

To First Mate Zec’s crew at Dragon's Back,
Keep yer breeches up for a few more days. A Compagnie envoy should be careening by all of ye soon. Laden with gifts, treasures, all from that bloody Caradec himself! A haul like that… we live like royalty for decades. Tighten your jibs. Wait for the signal. Then, fuck them right up.

One would think that dragons would remain amongst the pages of books, a creature of legend never to be seen, but not in the case of Dragon’s Back. While not a real dragon per say, the island tucked away within the Islands of the Moon on the way toward the Coast of Africa does have something that looks like one. If you sail near the rock formation on the north-east of the island, you’ll be sailing next to a formation that does somewhat look like the head of a western dragon. If you sail by night, its watchful eyes glow, leading weary sailors to its shores.

Coming in to land, the buoys of the outpost will guide pirate crews toward these towering spine-like rock pillars. The outpost gets its name from these – It’s literally sitting within the dragon’s back. Given it stands at the border between the Clan of Fara and Confederation of Ungwana, some believe the dragon guards the way toward Africa.

In these outposts, there are often opportunities to make a bit of coin. Pirates can talk to the locals to sell some of their plunder and buy wares to sell later. Dragon’s Back is usually hosting a variety of Rogue pirates and the Clan of Fara stops by regularly, as you never know what the tides will wash ashore. Furthermore there is a rumor running around Sainte-Anne about a famous Captain and his fleet sometimes roaming the seas around the island of the Moon.

Whilst most captains would would consider this a perfect opportunity to increase their wealth, more cautious captains notice that something definitely smells fishy... one does not always know what’s lurking in the shade of the Dragon. But for captains who do dare to take on that kind of challenge, Dragon’s Back is a good spot to go convoy hunting and the international trade route going through Southwest passage is just a stone throw away... ripe with the convoys of Compagnie Royale.

Trivia[]

"Here be dragons" means dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of a medieval practice of putting illustrations of dragons, sea monsters and other mythological creatures on uncharted areas of maps where potential dangers were thought to exist.
