Forts, also known as military bases, are major settlements with a large population that has access to wealth and resources. With all the money that flows into these seats of power, they are inevitably well-armed, well-defended, and will call in reinforcements. Even the best-equipped pirate ships will find pillaging them difficult. These pockets of civilization are protective of their surrounding waters and do not welcome pirates. You are not able to dock or trade with forts and some of them will attack on sight.
Plundering a fort will be far more challenging than a normal settlement and not something for the unprepared. The area around a fort is usually protected by more defensive towers than settlements. If you want the plundering to go smoothly, those and possibly other defences will need to be dealt with in advance or at some point during the attack.
Architecture[]
Currently only the major mega-corporations have fortresses, with architectural differences depending on the faction. Compagnie Royale fortresses are indicative of French Château and castles, such as Château de Pierrefonds. Conversely the fortresses of the Dutch Merchant Company are clearly inspired by Bastion forts and star fortresses, such as Fort Bourtange.

Guard Towers[]
Guard towers are land based fortifications which are often found near settlements, which in conjunction with reinforcing ships act as a settlements primary means of defense by firing on nearby hostile ships, including pirates attempting to plunder the connected settlement!
Whilst they might not able to move, Guard Towers also can't be boarded, are resistant to damage and have powerful weapons that scale with the level of the settlement they guard. All adjacent Guard Towers need to be destroyed when plundering a settlement, sometimes multiple times as they periodically respawn at different plundering stages. Dealing 3000 damage to towers using a spear will award the In-spear-rational achievement.
