The foreign and major military presence found in the East is the Dutch Merchant Compagnie. They hold several points of interest along the south of the coast with their capital near the Ring of Fire.

Oosten Capital is the Capital Settlement of the Dutch Merchant Company located in Naga Coast along the East Indies, on the eastern side of the map. To get to Oosten Capital, go to Telok Penjarah, then head south from the pirate den until you reach the Naga Coast.

Either interacting with or using the spy glass to view the settlement will award the achievement: Home of Dutch Merchant Company.

Deep within hostile waters, Fort Oosten contains a terrible secret. A grave has been desecrated and its corpse is missing, leaving DMC nerves frayed. Now would be an opportune time for a ready captain with a well armed ship to raze the fort and plunder its treasures. Plundering the settlement is the first step of the Grave News Investigation.

Oosten at a distance

Due to it's location and nature as the DMC capital, Oosten seems to be based on the city of Jakarta, with Naga Island being a stand in for Java. The "DMC" itself is based on the "VOC" (United East-Indies Company). The VOC, was at one point, the most powerful and richest company in the world. With "Batavia" (Jakarta), as the main city of the Dutch Indies. For nearly 200 years, they were also the only western country, to trade with Japan.

Windmills are a prominent feature of DMC settlements, which historically played a vital role in the history of the Netherlands for centuries, with there being more than 1,000 windmills scattered throughout the country, many of which are still in use. However the Dutch built few if any windmills in Indonesia as the land didn't need draining. Furthermore they were expensive to run, build and maintain, whilst labor was cheap and wind was unreliable; thus their appearance in Skull and Bones is anachronistic.
