The Red Isles is one of the 3 Regions in Skull and Bones that were available in the Closed Beta. It is the first region the player sees and explores after finishing the tutorial. It is heavily inspired by Madagascar and the surrounding Islands.
The Red Isle has become a vital outpost for the Pirate Round, a trade route between East and West. The arrival of pirates and corporations has exaccerbated tensions between local clans.
Lore of the Red Isles[]
The Red Isle is a beautiful but treacherous place, a borderland paradise tom by factional wars, cattle raiders, and Western merchant fleets greedy for its rare luxury commodities, Historically, the isle was the site of busy, thriving seaports where settlers seeking a new life could come and stake out fertile land or a commercial enterprise. But war and weather have devastated many of these ancient anchorages- monstrous Indian Ocean cyclones have finished the job that local strife started.
Two bitter local rivals, the Sea People and the Clan of Fara, dominate regional politics. The predominant Western power, the French Compagnie Royale, is viewed with suspicion by both factions-indeed, the Compagnie engages in open conflict with the Sea People while dealing warily with Clan of fara traders. Buyers and sellers interested in the bustling black market of stolen goods find their way to the pirate haven of Sainte-Anne. The Red Isle is also rumored to be the site of a legendary pirate utopia called Lanitra.
A Land Divided[]
The Red Isle is a troubled region whose territory is split between two warring fac tions, the Sea People and the Clan of Fara. The Fara consider themselves the only true descendants of the isle's ancient first settlers and see the Sea People as interlopers. In the south, a Compagnie Royale colony anchored by a stronghold called Fort Louis was overrun years ago by a native revolt that the French blame on the Sea People.
The ships of the Red Isle natives distinctly reflect each faction's iconic emblems. The fleet of the Sea People is trimmed in blue and bristles with jagged adornments that mirror the serrated bill of the tribe's sailfish emblem. Clan of Fara vessels are emblazoned with their tribal symbol, the red horned bull.
Clan of Fara[]
Wielding deadly javelins, these fearsome Red isle marauders raid for cattle and steal cargo from any ship that sails into what they believe is their ancestral territory, Fara clans-folk wear red clothing to signal an aggressive demeanor... and to signify their belief that Clan of Fara veins pulse with the sacred blood of the island's earliest inhabitants. Some clan members use decorative face paint and accessorize with rope or beaded jewelry.
Clan of Fara architecture is often adorned with the distinctive crescent shape of zebu horns, the humpbacked cattle that form the basis for wealth and prestige in the Red Isle lowlands. Amulets or idols engraved with the horns are said to aid in cattle thievery, a highly ritualized activity in Fara culture.
The Sea People[]
Adorned with rope and jewelry crafted from seashells, the Sea People carry spears traditionally used for spearfishing. As descendants of migrants themselves, they are friendly to foreigners and maintain a tradition of mixing with other cultures - indeed, they dress primarily in welcoming greens and blues, symbolic of the open sea. Their tribal emblem is a blue sailfish with a prominent serrated bill - one of the fastest fish in the ocean.
Locations in the Red Isles[]
The Red Isle has always been a borderland, and it still is now that it serves as a "refreshment station" for European ships in search of fresh meat and water. The island is a dangerous place, ravaged by raiders and civil war. In their traditions, the Malagasy people remember how their Great Ancestors once came from the East in canoes, guided by the stars. Other waves of settlers came here, mixed, and established wealthy port cities. But these were destroyed long ago, then flooded by typhoons.
Regional sights include the eerie silhouette of Dragon's Back Island and the rock-arch entrance to Vorona Falls, a once prosperous port city shattered by the Fara war kings, plundered by European fleets, then flooded by typhoons. Visit the great Sacred Tree of Fara where clan warriors sacrifice zebu cattle to honor the isle's first inhabitants, and the imposing clifftop ruins of Fort Louis, once a French fort but now a ramshackle smuggling outpost.
The stunning Royal Burial Ground of the Clan of Fara ruling family features stands of carved funeral poles arrayed around a massive central pillar. Be sure to explore the ruins of the legendary egalitarian republic of Lanitra, once a utopian haven of freedom where pirates and other outcasts fled to start a new life.
