The East Indies is one of the three regions in Skull and Bones. It is located in the north-eastern part of the map and consists of some mainland in the north and a high number of islands, resembling south eastern Asia. The entire eastern region of the Map inspired by the islands of Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia. It is also here where the second pirate den is located, Telok Penjarah. You can also restock and resupply here as it functions much the same as Sainte-Anne.

The local major faction that resides in the East Indies is the Dominion of Rempah. They control settlements in the northern half of the map much like the Ungwana of Africa. The foreign and major military presence also found in the East is the Dutch Merchant Compagnie. They hold several points of interest along the south of the coast with their capital near the Ring of Fire.

Lore of The East Indies[]

"Now I've seen the fury of the sea in the East Indies."

"Yah (well), sometimes shee gets picky. I think pirates are too salty for its taste. But you handled it nicely. The sea is funny sometimes. Years ago, I was sailing with my crew and we had to choose, face warships or the storm. We thought those sweaty red-faced colonizers wouldn't follow us in, so we chose the storm. We did escape the warships. But the bosun. The waves snatched her. She was half dead when we found her. Blue lips, covered in seaweed, but the look in her eyes..."

"I had never seen someone so alive. That smile on her face was pure joy. A rare sight those days. Now she leads my Unbound into storms with the same resilient blithe spirit. We're survivors you, and I, and everyone here in this den."
~ Admiral Rahma and the player captain

Nearly a century before our Skull and Bones era, Dutch merchant fleets - driven by their need to provide for a starving nation - arrived in the East Indies with unrivaled determination and brutality. The region's fertile river valleys and volcanic slopes rich in resources soon brought great wealth flowing back to European markets. The Dutch Merchant Company (DMC) became the dominant power in the eastern Indian Ocean -- a status they would not relinquish anytime soon.

In Skull and Bone's timeline, the DMC directly controls much of the region's production capacity for spice, indigo, cotton, and fragrant woods. A network of Dutch military forts protects these colony plantations. But native cultures of the East Indies have a long, storied history of relentless resistance to would-be conquerors. Add in a wave of young rebel pirates preying on the DMC's maritime trade routes, and the Dutch had their hands more than full.

A Land Uncharted[]

Outside the forbidding walls of DMC shoreline fortifications, the East Indies territories feature flourishing coastal communities where seafaring clans like the Dominion of Rempah operate outside of Dutch control. Pirate havens such as Telok Penjarah and other bustling harbor towns serve as crossroads where a wide variety of commercial interests intersect. Deeper inland, the dark remnants of long-dead jungle civilizations hint at the spectacular riches of an ancient world.

The juxtaposition of shattered stone ruins on island waterways with thriving seacoast settlements makes the exploration of the East Indies region a rich and varied experience. The cramped, twisting waterways and jutting rock formations of the east indies shoreline created perfect alcoves where predatory pirate gangs could lie in ambush. The rocky shores also created protective havens for smugglers to escape from DMC patrols.

Over centuries, many ancient, mysterious kingdoms have risen and then collapsed in the lush, concealing jungles of the vast East Indies archipelago. The fearsome Ring of Fire - a loop of powerful active volcanoes - adds geologic instability to the inland tangle of rain forest and rock interior regions of the East Indies are truly uncharted tentaries, dotted with hidden citadels and haunted ruins, long abandoned and filled with treasure and secrets

Revolution![]

The Dutch have controlled the East Indies for decades by establishing a network of sprawling plantations defended by a string of heavily fortified strongholds. These towering oppressive DMC garrisons have come under increasingly immense pressure from local factions in open revolt. Even the seemingly impenetrable Fort Oosten is a target of the fearsome native insurgency.

The Dominion of Rempah is a coalition of native clans that evolved into a well-organized resistance movement over decades of battling would-be colonizers. Led by the charismatic Admiral Rahma, the Rempah military includes a formidable fleet that features a contingent of highly trained female war sailors known as the Unbound. Over time, the Rempah have become a sizable thorn in the side of the DMC.

Rempah symbols are inspired by traditional Indonesian tattoos, and they can be found in-game as different options to customize a character's body. Traditionally, the marks are a way to tell the story of an individual's feats and identify their tribe. In Skull and Bones, young pirates adorn their bodies with these marks in an effort to intimidate others, but also to signify their unity as a crew.

Locations in The East Indies[]

Spices, indigo, cotton, and fragrant wood brought both wealth and despair to these eastern shores, which once served the ascent of seaborne empires of the East. But those times have faded. With local sultanates locked in conflict, the powerful Dutch Merchant Company swooped in to transform them into vassal states. Ruthless Dutch mercenaries conquered most of the spice production sites and now their plantations are guarded by a tight network of impregnable fortresses.

The east Indies' jungles hide many crumbling, abandoned remnants of previous occupations, some said to be haunted. Above the Lost City of Prei, once the lakeside capital of an inland empire, is now a ghost fortress filled with gigantic stone carved faces. And the eerie Khmoy Estate is rumoured to hold dark secrets and a hidden treasure.

The shadowy temple known as the Forgotten Candi is an ancient Buddhist shrine, reclaimed by the jungle. The last kingdom of Bukit Valley, decimated by plaque long ago, now serves as a pirate sanctuary. The stark ruins of Luk Khun were built amid water channels and lakes. The Dutch erected a spectacular botanical laboratory to research spice (and poppy) cultivation methods. And the mysterious Kelelawar Chamber harbors a giant Buddha statue in a rocky sea cove.
